At one point I suggested a "one cucumber a day" meal plan to each member of my family - similar to, "An apple a day ...".
After a quick internet search, however, I discovered I might be shortsighted in our use of cucumbers for mere culinary purposes as apparently one may also polish leather shoes, defog bathroom mirrors, reduce wrinkles, calm nerves, remove metal tarnish, and eliminate headaches. Who knew?
In a 1938 Works Progress Administration interview:
"I was born in New York, but spent a good portion of my childhood in the South; mother was the grand-daughter of a big plantation owner. All her folks lived in Tennessee, and we spent our summers there. Mother as a young woman never used make-up. She had a beauty treatment of her own ... To keep her skin white and smooth, she would massage it with fresh cucumber peel every night."
